How to support your body before, during, and after smoke exposure

If you've looked outside recently and noticed a hazy sky, smelled smoke in the air, or received an Air Quality Alert on your phone, you're not alone.

Wildfire smoke has become increasingly common across North America. Even when fires are hundreds of miles away, smoke particles can travel long distances and affect communities that are nowhere near the flames.

Many people assume wildfire smoke only affects the lungs.

In reality, it can influence the entire body.

Tiny airborne particles known as PM2.5 are small enough to reach deep into the lungs and even enter the bloodstream. Research suggests they may contribute to increased inflammation, oxidative stress, cardiovascular strain, and worsening of asthma and allergies.

Some people notice obvious symptoms.

Others simply feel more tired than usual.

You might experience headaches, brain fog, itchy eyes, fatigue, increased allergy symptoms, or more joint pain without realizing that poor air quality may be contributing.

The most important step is reducing exposure.

When the Air Quality Index is elevated, staying indoors when possible, running HEPA filtration, and avoiding strenuous outdoor exercise can significantly reduce the amount of smoke your body encounters.

Nutrition also plays an important role.

Wildfire smoke increases oxidative stress, meaning your body uses more antioxidants to help protect healthy cells.

A diet rich in colorful vegetables, berries, cruciferous vegetables, healthy fats, and adequate protein helps provide many of the nutrients needed for normal detoxification and tissue repair.

Hydration is equally important.

The respiratory tract functions best when tissues remain well hydrated, and adequate fluids also support the body's natural elimination pathways.

For some individuals, targeted nutritional supplements may provide additional support. Nutrients such as B vitamins, N-acetyl cysteine (NAC), quercetin, sulforaphane, and other antioxidants are sometimes used to support healthy inflammatory responses and normal detoxification pathways during periods of smoke exposure. These recommendations should always be individualized with guidance from a qualified healthcare practitioner.

While we can't always control the air we breathe, we can often strengthen the body's ability to respond.

Simple daily habits such as quality sleep, nutritious meals, hydration, stress management, and reducing unnecessary exposure can help your body remain more resilient during wildfire season.

As environmental challenges continue to increase, supporting your health doesn't require perfection.

It starts with thoughtful, consistent habits that allow your body to do what it was designed to do.
